Federal Period Lighting with added trim

Federal Style Wall Lanterns with added trim work for a custom design:

The Federal Period of lighting (circa 1700 to 1810) was during the Founding Father's Architectural era. Federal Wall Lantern Model No. O1019G and the Federal Wall Pocket Lantern Model No. O1020G are examples of this style. Further Federal period design is evident in the Old World Federal Wall Lantern Model No. O1023G and Model No. O1044G. These handcrafted lanterns hung on early public buildings, colonial style homes and plantations.

By adding Acanthus Leaves to the basic Federal style lantern a popular motif is used to decorate this traditional lantern.  Acanthus Leaves are a popular ornamental carving originally used in Greek and Roman architecture, but also used in China, India, Southeast Asia as well as the Mediterranean area. The design has come to symbolize “Enduring Life” due to the medical and medicinal uses of the Acanthus plants. The Acanthus plant has salt in its leaves that act as a preservative for food and used as a desiccant to keep moisture away from certain items such as rice. It was used topically for skin ailments, used as an antibiotic, aided in headache and rheumatism relief, and was even used as anti-venom.  The leaf has come to symbolize immortality, rebirth, and longevity and healing.  The ornamentation was widely seen in Cathedral Architecture and Gothic Churches and later during the Victorian Era. Originally the leaf was carved into stone or wood and eventually the Acanthus Leaf motif graduated to ironwork and metal scroll work.

The European Federal Wall Lantern, Model No. O3580CL was designed to add a European flare to an American classic. Any of our lanterns can be trimmed. Custom features can be added or deleted to suit your taste. Larger lantern designs are exemplified in the French Acanthus Leaf Wall Lantern Model No. O1330H and the Two-tiered Acanthus Leaf Wall Lantern Model No. O1332H.

All of our handcrafted lanterns are made of a heavy gauge copper or brass with cast brass structural supports (no punch riveting, all hand-soldered, no steel parts). Custom sizing and custom trim are available. We can change any lantern to gas. All lanterns come in wall mount, post top or hanging versions. We can make sconces to match or smaller garden models.
