The acanthus leaf originated from carved ivory in Egypt in the 14th century. Leaf borders and scroll motifs were used extensively in the arts and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. During the Italianate Victorian Period of Lighting (circa 1860 - 1885) the acanthus leaves were carved out of a flat surface by using a sharpened spoon. Today this splendid handcrafted feature adds elegance and beauty to any lantern.
