Searching "Outdoor Lighting"

English Bell Lantern in dark copper with clear-seedy glass

CAUTION WHEN SEARCHING “OUTDOOR LIGHTING” ON LINE

Recently I have noticed that the top results for “outdoor lighting” OR “handcrafted copper lanterns” are the big name box stores or the leading on-line retail outlets.  These top paid ads are misleading to the public as to the quality of the lighting they carry. These stores are not manufacturers of lighting; they are merely selling imports of inferior quality and workmanship.  You will not receive knowledgeable sales assistance on design or on their production process.

If you are in the market for high quality, hand-crafted lighting that is made from the finest gauge copper or brass and made in the USA you will not find it at these sites.  Cheaper exterior lighting is made from thin metals and held together with punch rivets that will corrode and deteriorate over time.  These lanterns are never recommended for coastal properties.

It is better to refine your search for a more specific criteria to make sure you are dealing with a fine craftsman or lighting manufacturer that has a reputable presence on line.  Remember – “you get what you pay for”. Make sure you ask the right questions such as: “what are your lights made of?”, “are your lights handcrafted?”, “are your lights made to order?” or “are your lights made of solid copper or brass?” and “how are your lights manufactured?’.  Most importantly don’t forget to ask if they are “made in the USA”.

Lighting is a very difficult purchase to make.  Not only do you need to choose the style you prefer but you need to know the size that works best and you need to be mindful of how the fixture will be installed.  Measurements for height are especially important.  Measurements for hanging lights need to take into account the depth of the canopy, the length of chain preferred as well as the overall appearance within the space.  Entranceways and hallways need special attention to width as well.  Wall sconces, interior or exterior, need to be hung at correct heights taking into account the back plate location of the desired fixture.  These measurements are crucial for proper height placement.

Don’t waste time looking at lighting from the large lighting sites and big box stores.  They all sell the same product.  They cannot be customized. These lights are usually discontinued within a year.  Where as handcrafted lighting is never discontinued, even after 10 years.  If your lanterns ever get damaged the handcrafted light can usually be repaired.  Not so with asian imports, they are never well made.  They may be cheaper quality and they generally sell what is trending.  Lighting should last a lifetime.  Quality lighting will stand the test of time!
